Under the Colombian Constitution of 1991, the President of Colombia is the head of state and head of government of the Republic of Colombia. As chief of the executive branch and head of the national government as a whole, the presidency is the highest political office in Colombia by influence and recognition. The president is also the commander-in-chief of the Military Forces of Colombia. The president is directly elected to a four-year term in a popular election. Since the passing of the ''Legislative Act 2 of 2004'', no person may be elected President more than twice. Upon the death, resignation, or removal from office of an incumbent President, the Vice President assumes the office.
